The Best Alcohol-Free Drinks to Replace Your Evening Glass
4 min read · All articles
Half the appeal of an evening drink is the ritual: the cold glass, the fizz, the moment to switch off. Keep the ritual — just change what's in the glass.
If you love beer
Alcohol-free beer has improved dramatically. Lagers, IPAs, stouts and wheat beers are now widely available, and many taste close to the real thing. They're often much lower in calories, too.
If you love wine
Alcohol-free wines vary a lot, so try a few. Sparkling versions tend to be the most convincing. Alternatively, try:
- Sparkling grape juice cut with soda water
- Shrubs (drinking vinegars) for that tart, complex edge
- Botanical "wine alternatives" made from teas and fruit
If you love cocktails
- Virgin mojito: lime, mint, a little sugar and soda
- Alcohol-free G&T: a non-alcoholic spirit with premium tonic and cucumber
- Ginger mule: ginger beer, lime and lots of ice
- Espresso tonic: a shot of coffee over tonic and ice (earlier in the day!)
Everyday options
- Sparkling water with fresh citrus, berries or a dash of bitters
- Kombucha, which has a tangy, grown-up flavour
- Iced tea brewed strong with lemon
- Hot drinks — chamomile, rooibos or hot chocolate — for winter nights
Make it feel special
Use your favourite glass, add plenty of ice and a garnish. It sounds small, but it signals to your brain that this is your moment — no alcohol required.
