High-Functioning Alcoholism: Signs It's Hiding in Plain Sight
5 min read · All articles
Not everyone struggling with alcohol fits the stereotype. Many people hold down good jobs, raise families and look completely fine from the outside — while drinking far more than they'd like to admit.
Why it goes unnoticed
If work gets done and bills get paid, it's easy to conclude there's no problem. But keeping things together often takes huge effort, and the cost shows up in health, sleep, mood and relationships.
Possible signs
- Drinking every day, or most days, "to unwind"
- Using alcohol as a reward or to cope with stress
- High tolerance — drinking a lot without seeming drunk
- Making jokes or excuses about how much they drink
- Drinking alone or before social events
- Getting irritable when drinking isn't possible
- Hiding or downplaying the amount
- Strict rules ("never before 5pm") that slowly slip
The hidden costs
Even without visible chaos, heavy regular drinking raises the risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, heart problems, several cancers, depression and anxiety.
If it's you
Be honest with yourself about the patterns above. Try a few alcohol-free days and notice how hard they feel. Talk to your doctor — especially if you have morning shakes or sweats, because stopping suddenly can be unsafe.
If it's someone you love
- Choose a calm, sober moment
- Talk about specific behaviours and how they affect you, not labels
- Avoid ultimatums in the first conversation
- Offer support, and look after yourself too
Change is possible at any point. Many people who quit say they wish they'd done it sooner — not because things were terrible, but because life turned out to be so much better.
