How to Socialise Without Drinking (and Still Have Fun)
4 min read · All articles
If alcohol has always been your social lubricant, going without it can feel daunting. The first few events are the hardest. After that, many people find they enjoy socialising more.
Before you go
- Decide your drink in advance. Know what you'll order so you're not caught off guard.
- Eat beforehand. Hunger makes everything harder.
- Set a leaving time. Most nights peak early; it's fine to leave before things get messy.
- Bring a buddy who knows what you're doing.
While you're there
- Get a drink in your hand fast. It removes most offers.
- Ask questions. Curiosity takes the pressure off you and makes great conversation.
- Find a role. Help the host, take photos, choose the music.
- Notice the moment. You'll remember every conversation tomorrow.
Feeling awkward is normal
The urge to drink at events is often about easing social nerves. The nerves fade within the first 20–30 minutes whether you drink or not. Ride them out.
Choose new kinds of plans
- Brunches and breakfasts
- Walks, hikes or swims
- Gigs, cinema, comedy or theatre
- Classes: climbing, cooking, pottery
- Coffee instead of drinks
The unexpected bonus
Sober socialising filters for the people you genuinely enjoy. And there's no hangover the next day — just good memories and a free morning.
