Why Do I Crave Alcohol in the Evening? (And How to Stop)

4 min read ยท All articles

For many people, the craving shows up like clockwork: getting home from work, starting dinner, putting the kids to bed. That's not a lack of willpower. It's a habit loop doing exactly what habits do.

The habit loop

  • Cue: a time, place or feeling โ€” 6pm, the kitchen, being tired
  • Routine: pouring a drink
  • Reward: a sense of relief, transition or "me time"

Do that every day and your brain starts anticipating the reward the moment the cue appears. That anticipation is the craving.

Other evening triggers

  • Tiredness and depleted willpower after a long day
  • Low blood sugar if you haven't eaten since lunch
  • Stress with no other release valve
  • Boredom when the evening stretches ahead

How to break the loop

  • Keep the cue, change the routine. Get home and immediately make a special alcohol-free drink.
  • Eat earlier. Have a snack around 5pm, so you're not arriving home starving.
  • Mark the transition differently. Change clothes, take a shower, go for a short walk.
  • Plan your evening. An open, empty evening invites a drink; a plan doesn't.
  • Have a circuit breaker ready. When the craving hits, give yourself 15 minutes and something to do.

It gets easier

Every evening you don't follow the old routine weakens the connection. After a few weeks, many people find 6pm comes and goes without the urge at all.
